Before Ogygia, there were seventeen huntresses riding through the woods with Artemis. We were a sisterhood, following an oath we made to dutifully follow Artemis for as long as the Fates allowed us to live. Then, Ogygia happened, and when I woke up after nearly dying, war reduced my sisters to mangled corpses.

In the days that followed my freedom, I fell into a trance of despondency. Many huntresses have died either a traitor or an unsuspecting casualty in the gods’ games for a crown. Before I had the chance to truly mourn the losses of Sika and the others, or wallow in the rage of Frigate and Akita’s deceit, more huntresses fell like bloodied raindrops.

Now, as we stand around an army of monsters, only five of us remain.

Six, if we count Jamila.

A small piece of my heart fell with each dead huntress, both traitorous and loyal, for there is no greater loss than a sister. Every swipe of my new sword towards the Colchian Dragon was my promise to the fallen huntress. I will never forget them. They are my sisters from the moment they took the oath to serve Artemis until the moment I die. Even the traitors like Frigate and Akita, whose sanity withered far before their souls. I did not see it until it was too late.

I fight for all of us who have ridden beside Artemis. My sisters who have died and stained the ground we fight on. I kill the Colchian Dragon, dragging my blade across his neck until his head falls to the ground. It is the closest I will ever get to closure for all the lives I have lost.

Because I killed the Colchian Dragon so fast, nobody else died.

The decimation of the surrounding monsters does not ease any thoughts of future goodwill. It is a stark reminder that no matter how valiantly we fight, Styx will continue to send every monster at her disposal. Until every huntress falls or Saffron disintegrates Styx. Vee claps my back with praise for decapitating the Colchian Dragon, while Dýnami quickly creates a fire. She jokes about the tastiness of dragon meat, which makes Shikari and June laugh. Iris portals the remaining corpses away, and she smiles as she places a tender kiss on the top of Artemis’s head.

Only Jamila mirrors my emotions as she asks. “Wasn’t Atlas guiding all these monsters to us? Where is he?”

“Quivering in his overused boots,” Dýnami jokes.

But this time, Shikari and June do not join in on the laughter.

Our victory is short-lived. We peruse the surrounding trees, searching for hidden forms within the shadows of the woods. Dýnami’s desire to try dragon meat has disintegrated, along with the laughter and the momentary smiles. I raise my sword, still sticky with the dragon’s blood, and I point towards a section of the woods.

“He wanted us tired and weak,” Iris whispers.

“And with our guards down,” Artemis continues.

“So when he strikes with the rest of the monsters,” I say.

“With Typhon,” Shikari adds with a wobbly voice, as she remembers our past, facing him in the Labyrinth.
